BUT...

My analysis.

While managing the logistics of the temple’s daily functions, Sri. Champat Rai was widely regarded as having "encyclopedic" knowledge of the temple, it's in and out.

​Paradoxically, while he was meticulous with records and history, his administrative style was criticised for being *overly reliant on personal trust rather than professional, institutional systems* .  

Colleagues and fellow trustees have noted that his "excessive simplicity" and " *stubborn and authoritative* " nature led him to delegate sensitive tasks to a small circle of personal aides, *including his driver,* whom he trusted implicitly.  

​ When the embezzlement controversy broke, Trust treasurer Govind Dev Giri noted that Rai had become a bottleneck by refusing to delegate enough authority to professional administrative systems, *preferring to keep the management close and informal.* 

 *Conclusion* 

Sri. Champat Rai has simple, austere lifestyle that projected dedication rather than the power-seeking typical of high-level administrative authorities.

His style was seen as insular and lacking in professional transparency, creating an environment where "personal loyalty" was prioritised over "administrative accountability".

It is sad he got a black mark for which responsibility lies on him only due to his own mistakes which can't be ruled out. He has not relied on Professionalism as far as money matters are concerned.

 Who is this Champat Rai?

During the Emergency imposed by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, a young physics professor named Champat Rai was teaching students at RSM Degree College in Dhampur, Bijnor, when the police arrived to arrest him because of his association with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Professor Champat Rai was immensely popular among his students and knew what might happen if he were arrested in front of them. The police officers, too, anticipated that the students might strongly resist.

Champat Rai told the officers, “Please go for now. Let me finish my class, and I will come to the police station myself.”

The police trusted his word and left.

After completing his lecture, he calmly asked his students to return home peacefully. He then went home, sought the blessings of his parents by touching their feet, and quietly reported to the police station, prepared for what would become a long imprisonment.

After enduring 18 months in various prisons across Uttar Pradesh under extremely difficult conditions, he was released. His determination and strength of character were recognized by Rajju Bhaiya, the then Sarsanghchalak (chief) of the RSS, who entrusted him with the responsibility of preparing Ayodhya for the movement to build the Shri Ram Temple.

Champat Rai resigned from his government job and devoted himself entirely to what he considered the service of Lord Ram. He traveled from village to village throughout the Awadh region, knocking on every door and building a network of dedicated young volunteers ready to face every challenge. Every lane and corner of Ayodhya came to know Champat Rai, and he, in turn, became familiar with every street, every locality, and every aspect of the region. His knowledge of Ayodhya’s history, geography, and contemporary affairs became so extensive that his colleagues nicknamed him “The Encyclopedia of Ayodhya.”

Even before the demolition of the Babri Masjid, Champat Rai began collecting documentary evidence related to the Ram Janmabhoomi. He read and preserved lakhs of pages of documents and countless ancient texts. His home eventually became filled with these records, and he had memorized much of the information. When senior advocate K. Parasaran and other lawyers fought the legal battle over the Ram Janmabhoomi, it was Champat Rai who supplied much of the documentary evidence that they relied upon.

On 6 December 1992, while many prominent leaders on the stage were urging the kar sevaks to maintain discipline and not damage the Babri structure, Champat Rai was standing some distance away with local youth volunteers.

A journalist asked him:

“What do you think will happen now?”

Smiling, he replied:

“This is Lord Ram’s Vanar Sena. They have not come here merely to perform drills at the sound of a whistle. They have come to accomplish a purpose, and they will not leave until they have done it.”

After saying this, he reportedly picked up a shovel and walked toward the Babri structure. Soon, cries of “Jai Shri Ram” echoed all around, and history was made.

Champat Rai was not appointed Secretary of the Shri Ram Temple Trust by chance. He dedicated his entire life to the service of Ram Lalla. Affectionately, many people call him “Ram Lalla’s Patwari” (caretaker/record keeper).

The message describes him as a warrior of Sanatan Dharma rather than someone who merely makes loud speeches.

It further states that after Kalyan Singh, Champat Rai openly accepted responsibility before both the courts and the public for the events surrounding the Babri demolition cases.

The message attributes the following statement to Champat Rai:

“As soon as we see the spire of the Ram Temple completed, we will begin inspiring the younger generation to take up the responsibility of Mathura.”

The message also portrays him as a disciplined ascetic and scholar who paid attention even to the smallest details of religious practice.

It recounts an incident in which he stayed overnight at someone’s home in Kashi. Upon noticing that the bed was positioned so that his feet would point south while sleeping, he was unwilling to sleep that way even for one night. He had the bed repositioned before going to sleep. According to the message, a man who travels across rural India in a simple dhoti and kurta while strictly observing even small aspects of Hindu tradition would naturally be deeply thoughtful and committed regarding the Ram Temple.

The message concludes by asserting that those who criticize him are not worthy even of the dust beneath his feet.
