(2 Act Play For Children)

Characters

Gurkha: A hapless security guard.

Thief: A clever trickster

Scene 1

Gurkha: Hey! Who are you, sneaking out of the house at this hour?

Thief: (Startled) Oh no, I've been caught! Please, Gurkha sir, let me go. I'm just a small, ordinary thief!

Gurkha: Well, I finally caught someone! I've been fired from five jobs in four months for failing to do my job right. I just got this one, and it hasn't even been a month! Do you think I'll let you go now?

Thief: Five jobs? Why do you keep this job? I know a much easier way to earn money!

Gurkha: Oh! What job is that?

Thief: Ah, it's nothing... (He pretends to think)

Gurkha: Hurry up and tell me!

Thief: Ha! Does your job include night duty?

Gurkha: Not just include it—it's only night duty, you know.

Thief: So, staying awake all night is easy for you, right?

Gurkha: Yes, yes.

Thief: Then I have a very easy job for you.

Gurkha: Easy? Oh, tell me quickly, what is it?

Thief: Simple! Just join me. We can both earn great money together.

Gurkha: What? You're asking me to steal? You said it was a good job!

Thief: Stealing is also a job, sir! And the shift is only at night.

Gurkha: (Waving his hand) Quiet! I got my hopes up for a 'good job.' Right now, I just hope I don't lose this one. Since I've caught you, I might finally keep this job for a whole year! Ha ha ha!

Thief: Sir Gurkha sir, please let me go. Have mercy!

Gurkha: Let you go? That's impossible!

Thief: (Thinks hard, then points to the ground) In that case, you've forgotten one small thing.

Gurkha: What? Thief: Look! There are so many sharp stones here. You're wearing boots. Now look at my feet—I don't even have sandals.

Gurkha: Why not?

Thief: I forgot them inside the house.

Gurkha: What am I supposed to do about that?

Thief: You don't have to do anything. If you just give me permission, I'll go inside, put on my sandals, and come right back out.

Gurkha: What if you run away?

Thief: Why would I run away? I brought the stolen goods right here! I'll leave them with you. I'll be back in a flash.

Gurkha: That's true. If the loot is here, I can trust you, right?

Thief: Exactly what I'm saying, sir!

Gurkha: You must return immediately!

Thief: I'll be back before you can blink! (To himself) Phew, my poor life is saved! **(The Thief runs offstage)

Gurkha: It's been so long, and he hasn't returned. Luckily, no one saw. If they had, they would have fired me for letting the thief escape!

Scene 2

Gurkha: (Suddenly sees the Thief) Hey! Who are you... Ah! It's the same thief from yesterday! What is this? You promised to bring sandals and you tricked me!

Thief: Oh, it was my mistake, sir. I won't do it again. Please, let me go this one time, oh holy man!

Gurkha: What? Let you go? Impossible! Come on, you're going to the police station with me!

Thief: (Thinks, then looks at the Gurkha's feet) Mr. Gurkha, look at your feet.

Gurkha: Why? (Looks down) Hey! I'm not wearing my boots!

Thief: That's what I'm saying, sir! Look how many stones there are. How can you walk barefoot in a place like this? And... how would the police at the station believe you're a Gurkha? You must be wearing boots, right?

Gurkha: Yes. You are right. But my boots are in my room behind the house. I left them there.

Thief: Shall I go and bring them for you?

Gurkha: Do you think I'm a fool to send you there? I know you'll run away again just like yesterday!

Thief: Oh, no, that's not what I'm suggesting. You... you... could do this instead!

Gurkha: How? Thief: You suspect me of running away. So, I'll stay right here. I won't go anywhere. You go and bring your boots!

Gurkha: (Claps his hands) Ah! This is brilliant! It didn't strike me! You stay right here. I'll go now, put on my boots, and come right back. **(The Gurkha runs offstage)

Thief: (Exclaims, victorious) Ha! My life is saved! And this time, I even got to keep the stolen goods! Ha ha ha! **(The Thief runs offstage)
